Autism Spectrum Disorder is known as ASD. The number of children with ASD is growing from year to year in the US. 1 out of 68 children is identified with ASD. Children with ASD exhibit a common set of characteristics that naturally make them more susceptible to danger. As a result, parents face challenges in figuring out and avoiding the triggers of dangerous behavior, and they must effectively intervene the dangerous behaviors.
Solo traveling becomes a trend and 70% people enjoy solo travelings. However, when solo travelers have fun, they meet some problems which decrease the good experience in
“Parents' challenges include they have limited time to bring their children to therapists, which can be a couple of times per week."
“The parents worry about their children’s safety issues, which is huge concern. Because the children may hurt themselves. A child may repeat a behavior pattern hitting a wall and does not feel hurt.”-- Yie-Wen Kuan, Clinical Psychologist
“Some families take time to adjust to the new situation. When a child get diagnosed with ASD his parents are provided with lots of recommendations and instructions.”
“A challenge that we face in this process is when parents describes a behavior that we do not get to see.”--Kelly A. Johnson, clinical psychologist
After conducting secondary research about the multiple aspects of ASD, I got in touch with two experts in the ASD field. I interviewed them to get first-hand information about ASD. I focused on the challenges for both parents and therapists.
ASD as a complex disorder, experts can provide valuable, precise and unbiased information. What is more, they helped us reveal the potential opportunities.

Through the introduction of the two experts, I met with three moms of ASD children and had a chance to learn more about their needs in person. In order to excavate their most eager needs, I interviewed them on a wide range of topics from diagnosis, to treatment, education, kids' daily lives and their frustration moments.
The focus group improved the dynamics of the conversation. Parents' situation resonated with one another and they exposed common needs.
Interview with three mothers who having ASD children.
Analyzed the data and categorized the findings.
Safety of children is the major concern of parents.
Parents desire a tool to help them better understand the behavior of their children and a tool that presents useful suggestions for dealing with the dangerous behaviors of their children.
Parents need a convenient tool to precisely and conveniently communicate with therapists
Behavior data recording, annotating, analyzing and data sharing is the solution
Based on the findings from previous research, I conducted a competitive analysis and concluded the cons. I then created a diagram which includes the ecosystem of the families of ASD children. Finally, I brainstormed the possible solutions from every aspect, targeting to satisfy parents' needs, while overcoming the shortcomings of existing similar products.
Solution:
Recording, annotating and analyzing the behavior data of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
In order to overcome the shortcomings of current competitive products, I brainstormed three ideas.
In order to evaluate the concept with users, I prototyped a low-fidelity wireframe by using Balsamiq. Based on the feedback, I created wireframes with more details using Axure.
I conducted the evaluations and usability testings to iterate the design. For the first round of evaluation, I made a paper prototype to test the idea of the product and explored more needs from target users.
For the second round of testing, I designed a diary study. The diary study was followed up by usability testing with the interface of the app. I created a hi-fi mockup using Sketch and Axure.
After designing the user interfaces using Sketch, I used Principle to make the micro-animation of the app.
Parents have to suffer intense psychological challenges from taking care of children with ASD. Parents need to feel motivated and supported.
Parents can tap on the heart at any moment. When there is an improvement in their kids' negative behavior, parents will be informed.
Handy information and resources, such as innovative therapy, will be endlessly shared with parents.
In order to encourage parents to record behavior, a timely notification will be sent to parents and parents will be asked to edit it.
Parents need to input data by referring to the video. Data will be used in generating data analysis.
Behavior type, behavior trend and relevant information are filled out.
Parents input the trigger category or trigger name based on their judgement.
Intervention type and intervention effect are filled out.
The behavior trend, triggers and intervention are provided to parents. Parents can gain insight about the useful intervention and learn about which triggers should be avoided.
