A mobile app that improves the user experience of solo travelers

Prototype

In order to show the flexible animation effect, I found Framer.js which requires coding. I learned it quickly and applied to Travellian mobile app.

Feel free to interact with it on your phone by scanning the QR-code below.

Survey

65 Respondents, 70% people enjoy traveling solo
The problems they meet are:  • Lacking a sense of safet  • The safety situation of the place  • The trustworthiness of the travel companions
• Feeling alone • Higher Expense

Project Background

Solo traveling became a trend and 70% people enjoy solo travelings. The people who do solo traveling do so for many reasons. For example, some of them enjoy the independence and freedom to make a decision during the travel; some of them have to do solo traveling because they have time conflicts with their families and friends.

However, when solo travelers have fun, they meet some problems which decrease the good experience.

The problems solo travelers meet are: lacking a sense of safety, feeling alone, and the higher expense. I thought about a mobile app to help improve the experience for solo travelers.

Persona

After understanding the top three problems of solo travelers, I thought about the primary persona and secondary persona.

Ideation & Sketch

Based on the persona and the survey results, I began to brainstorm the solution. First, I thought about the goal of tasks, scenarios, and possible features. In total, I generated  4 scenarios, 6 tasks, and 15 features. I prioritized the goals of users based on the survey results and the features based on feasibility and the supplement function for other features in order to systematically solve the three problems of users.

Task Flow

After prioritizing the tasks and features, I thought about the task flow.

Wireframes

After prioritizing the tasks and features, I created wireframes using Sketch. There are four major sections: Safety, Activity, Companions and My profile.

Mood Boards

Before doing visual design, I created a mood board to show the sense of the products. The feelings I want to give to users are safe, social, and free.

Visual Design & Exploration

When I worked on visual design, I explored multiple options for features and designs and tried to find the best visual clues design by regularly asking for feedback from users.

Design System

It is my first time developing a design system on my own

Learnings

• It is crucial to consider the pre-existing users' behaviors and habits when they interact on certain platforms, such as IOS, when designing a new product on that platform

• Wireframes that are used to test the interaction flow with users should be high fidelity without visual design, but  with clear text and details so that users are not confused with the interface which may distract them from focusing on interaction flow

• The mobile app should be focused on core functions which solve the target users' biggest pain point and it is better to design these functions to be a complimentary and systematic solution.
