A simple web app helping you manage and balance your personal life and work

Background

Project Background

Nowadays, people are busy. It is quite important that people manage their deadlines in a smart way. For more effective teamwork, there are already a series of products to help people to manage their collaboration. However, there are no effective tools for personal use to flexibly manage their attributed tasks or long-term project. Also, with the increasing need of a balanced life, people expect a tool which helps them to balance their time spent on work and their personal lives.

Survey

65 Respondents, 70% people enjoy traveling solo
The problems they meet are:  • Lacking a sense of safet  • The safety situation of the place  • The trustworthiness of the travel companions
• Feeling alone • Higher Expense

Process

Research

At first, I interviewed 6 participants about how they manage their tasks for their work and personal life and conducted competitive analysis based on the tools they are currently using.

Sketch & Ideation

After narrowing down the opportunities and target users, I began to think about the task flow of users and sketched out the ideas and features. I especially paid attention to the different views of the calendar based on day, week, month and year. I sketched out how these views interact with each other.

Wireframes & Prototype Iteration

After sketching, I used Balsamiq to make a quick interactive prototype in order to get some feedback from users. I created wireframes for almost every step and there were 70 wireframes. You could watch the interactive prototype here. For this version, I created the concepts: Deadlines & Steps Deadlines.

However, I got feedback that this is complex and not simple enough to use. Also, the users had a problem in understanding the meaning of the "steps deadline" accurately .

Thus, I changed the concept "steps deadline" into "steps". " Step" is more likely to be understood and it means the beginning of the step rather than the due time for a step. Then, I simplified the task flow and cut off the redundant flows to less than 30 screens.

Usability Testing

I conducted three usability sessions with two target users. They were busy professionals and students. I recruited them by making use of the Writing Center Service in UW.

Major take-aways from usability testing:
One user is confused about adding and editing deadlines and steps directly to the calendar. Another user said if she is given the option to edit the calendar, she would like to add to and edit the calendar, which overshadows the advantages of the left panel that is intentionally designed to edit and add deadlines and steps while users can refer to the calendar based on different days,  weeks, months, and even years.

Two users misunderstood the meaning of a color band visualizing the project duration because I used a similar color with the theme color of this tool.
